Google WebP 與傳統圖檔有何不同?

Google一直在致力於提升網路的效能而努力，在前面文章Google : Lets make the web faster提到，Google建議網站提昇程式的效能並利用工具找出效能的漏洞，在網站優化的要務 : 速度、速度、速度文章也說過許多如何提升網站效能的討論，近期Google又推出WebP圖檔格式，希望網路上的影像可以更加提升效能 ...

根據Google的說法，WebP ( 發音如weppy) 比JPEG增強39.8%的壓縮效能，並且可以在壓縮比與圖像品質上讓使用者決定。

根據這篇文章Google's Really Taking This Speed Thing Seriously，網頁傳輸上有65%都是影像檔案，因此如果能夠改善圖檔的效能，就能讓網頁更加快速的顯示。你可以透過Google的展示站台來看看WebP的樣貌，並且還有轉換工具。

Google比較了WebP/JPEG 2000/JPEG，發現確實WebP在壓縮上表現都比其他格式來得好 (如下圖)。

在WebP Gallery中有些範例圖片，如下圖

上面的圖檔中，以WebP格式的檔案減少了10.6%。

這篇Image Comparisons: PNG, WebP, and HIPIX表示，WebP確實具有最好的壓縮功能，但是在WebP的Wikipedia中，Jason Garrett-Glaser認為與JPEG/x264相比較，WebP的品質最糟糕 ...

但是不管如何，WebP的格式雖然品質未必最優，但是與檔案大小的壓縮相比，WebP的品質應該是可以接受的。在Google’s New WebP Image Standard Is All About SEO就明白的指出了，搞SEO就必須要用WebP啦。

改天真的必須花點時間來開始使用WebP好好的壓縮壓縮了。
